Breastfeeding tips for new moms

Dr Lavanya, Paediatrician wrote breastfeeding tips for this BreastFeeding week (August 1 to 7) 

Prepare for breastfeeding while pregnant

  • Check your nipples
  • Get a lactation counselor advice were available
  • Learn how frequent to feed your baby
  • Learn how to maintain breast milk supply

At Birth-Skin to Skin contact

  • This helps in earlier breastfeeding
  • Should be done  soon after birth
  • Baby is dried and laid over mother bare chest covering both with a blanket.
  • Also regulates baby temperature

Breastfeed As soon as possible

  • This stimulates breast milk production
  • The increased bond between mother and baby 
  • Keep the baby close to you to encourage  frequent breastfeeding

Breast feed-Let baby get a good latch

  • Tickle the baby lips to encourage open moth wide. 
  • Position your self  baby nose to nipple and belly to belly
  • Pull your baby close so that chin and lower jaw move into the breast first.
  • Baby should have a mouth full of breast
  • Should feel a tuggling pulling sensation and no pain

Positioning of a baby during feeding

  • Side lying position is good position to breast feed for a mother who has had a caesarian section
  • Cradle position is commonly used to feed babies
  • Here the head of baby is held in forearm with the body and head held in same line.
  • There are also other positons of feeding you can learn from your pediatrician
  • Frequency of breastfeeding 

    • Feed every 2-3 hours
    • Each feed duration should last for 15-20 minutes
    • Frequent feeding boosts milk supply

    Cues baby is hungry


    Breastfeeding when nipple hurts 

    • You can continue breastfeeding even when nipple hurts.
    • Nipple hurts when latching is not proper and this has to be addressed with your pediatrician or lactation counselor

    Diet during breastfeeding

    • Mother should have a properly balanced diet during breastfeeding
    • Whatever they eat will be tasted by babies in their milk and will get baby ready for table foods 
    • Breast milk has 88%water so must stay hydrated adequately
